A
high-tech car international car smuggling ring responsible for the
theft of at least $1.5 million worth of exotic cars has been busted up
thanks to the efforts of the LAPD, U.S. Customs agents and one very
savvy businessman, CBS News reports.
Hollywood, Calif. luxury car rental service Rent-in-Style is
in the business of renting out six-figure exotic cars, fulfilling
automotive dreams for anyone with enough coin. Company owner Eric
Blumberg lent out a black 2010 Ferrari 458 Italia at a price of around $2,000 per day, then noticed via GPS tracking that the car hadn’t moved in days.
Asking
himself who would pay $2k to rent a Ferrari only to let it sit without
even firing up the engine, Blumberg tracked the car to a warehouse
conveniently located near one of the nation’s biggest ports.
Police
opened an investigation, but the Ferrari was already in Hong Kong,
where exotic cars can fetch double their MSRP price on the black market.
Customs agents used tracking data from the 458 Italia’s shipping
container to recover 20 luxury and exotic cars, worth an estimated $1.5
million.
Blumberg
got his Ferrari back, as did the rightful owners of the other vehicles.
